Can you send more detailed info?
1. Can you play audio? Can you record audio?
2. Does file /dev/dsp exist?
3. Does you have permission to open it?
4. Sometimes KDE or Gnome "privatise" sound card. Can you run listener when
graphic environment isn't started?

If all previous checks doesn't help - we can check whats wrong further :)
Definitely, listener must work also on Ubuntu - i sucessfully compiled it under
Cygwin / Windows - now i can use also windows boxes to record phone
conversations :)
