Sorry for the empty reply, blond moment... 

I found:char channels = 1;  /* mono or stereo */
in line 44, changed it and recompiled, but didn't work...   :(
I still have to finish (TONITE) a full GUI built using linuxfromscrath.org 
so I can ditch Mandrake (I hope *THAT'S* the problem), and try again. 

We run an aeroambulance bussines and we will be marketing dispatch systems.  
As part of the deal, we need a voice recording solution to track radio 
calls, as much as 8 simultaneously.  I pushed the Linux issue and they gave 
me the go ahead for as long as I have something to show on Monday. 

If this works, I hope that your system will be out there, I appreciate the 
fast response.
If you are in the USA, and don't mind a phone call, send me a number and

PS:  BTW, I am running on a Dell Optiplex GX110 (Not a C, but a G)
I'll try again on Toshiba Satellite A35-S159 laptop when I finish compiling 
alsa for my new box.
