The input selected for recording from is controlled by the mixer.
aumix or alsamixer will allow you to select the input device.
 
In alsamixer it is the input marked with "CAPTUR", in aumix it is the input marked with the R
select the input you want to use and "space bar" to toggle the record or capture.
 
You would use the standard input device /dev/dsp

I am thinking of using the audio analog input for recording.
It should be a matter of pointing listener to the appropriate /dev/thing.
Or is it?
Besides:   what would "thing" be?
