Re: Using analog aux (or CD) in as input.

Well, I am trying to "advance" building my own Linux out of linuxfromscratch.org (and trying to stay away from the pitfalls of the distributions out there).
It's been hard and rewarding, and I feel that I can do *A LOT* of stuff that I didn't even know how to even ask about before. I have made *HUGE* improvements in some areas and I haven't even scratched some others.
Sound is one of the areas that I just began tapping.
I my sound ignorance goes beyond Linux, my experience with sound boils down to turning my stereo on and off... :)
I did build a 2.6.10 kernel with alsa and downloaded and successfully compiled the alsa tools, but I am still researching (researching is what I do when I don't know what I am doing... :)

Anyhow, I'll pull your pointer up to my documentation and I'll keep you posted of my progress (IF ANY!!! :)
Thanks!

As I recall You are using some kind of build your own linux distribution????
what are you using for sound card drivers????
If you are using the alsa sound card drivers then you should have the alsamixer. it would have been created when you compiled the alsa-tools package or alsa-utils package.
It is a mixer, like a music sound system would have a mixer to adjust the sound levels from various microphones and other audio inputs.

The alsa documentation has lots of good stuff about all the different parts.

What ever kernel module sound package you installed should have a mixer. If you
look in the documentation for what ever sound drivers you are using you should find info on the mixer that goes with it.

aumix is the name of the original mixer used in the redhat distributions before alsa came along.

It is the job of the mixer to control the volume of the inputs and outputs to and from the sound card.
The mixer also controls which input is used to "capture" audio.

I guess I assumed that because you were building your own linux you would be a more advanced user.
We all had to start somewhere.

Please excuse my ignorance, but I am a fairly recent Linux newcomer and it is my first ever sound experience (I'm a virgin so to speak, please be gentle... :)

All that "aumix or alsamixer" stuff sounds like classic Japanese to me... :(
Can you please point me to some (humanly readable) literature to read?
What are those anyway, programs to compile, conf files to modify?
So many toys, so little time...
