 Actually, this would not have worked.  I think it was lucky
 I got a 'ps xauw' and after that I could run no commands
 since the process table was (apparently) full of the
 '[tail] <defunct>' processes.

 I was trying to do a 'shutdown -r now' and could not even do
 that so the luxury of running a trace did not exist.  I did
 see a two or more of '[multitail] <defunct>' in the ps listing
 as well.  Apologies for not remembering that in original mail.
